Chuck Norris facts

2005

Chuck Norris facts are made-up, wildly exaggerated claims about how tough the actor Chuck Norris is. They started in 2005 on a random fact generator built by Ian Spector, a teenager on Long Island, after users of the Something Awful forums had done the same for Vin Diesel.

The story

In March 2005, forum users began trading over-the-top facts about Vin Diesel. Spector built a page that showed a random fact each time it loaded and let visitors send in new ones; it had 20,000 hits on its first day. When those jokes wore thin he held a poll for a new star, and Norris, added after readers asked for him, won by a landslide.

The Norris generator took off in November 2005, after a friend linked it on CollegeHumor. By January 2006 it had 48 million hits and more than 38,000 facts from fans waiting to be read. The talk show host Conan O’Brien had been playing clips of Walker, Texas Ranger as a running joke since 2004, which helped.

Norris was puzzled at first, then took the facts as a compliment. He sued over a 2007 book of them and dropped the case in 2008, and in 2009 he published his own, The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book, with his favourites.

Why it matters

It was one of the first joke formats anyone could join in: one pattern, endless new lines, soon copied for other stars in other countries. That is close to how most memes have worked ever since.

Where it is now

Chuck Norris died in March 2026, aged 86, and the facts came back all over the internet as tributes, with Ian Spector telling the story of how they began.
